Thiosulphate Citrate Bile-salts Sucrose (TCBS) Medium

A selective agar for bacteria of the genus Vibrio developed by Kobayashi et al. 1963. (Nippon Saikingaku Zasshi 18:387-392). It strongly inhibits the growth of other bacteria due to the presence of bile salts, and therefore, it is not suggested for any posterior analyses. However, it is very useful for the purification of vibrios since colony morphology can vary significantly among species and strains.

It is recommended, for this purpose, to let the colonies grow for 48-72 hours (image below). Since it is composed of many ingredients not easily acquired, we recommend buying it from commercial sources. It is NOT necessary to add extra salt (NaCl), as it already contains an adequate amount for the growth of most vibrios.
